Opening Hearts Jigsaw Puzzle
Well folks, it was insanely hot in Richmond! 100 degrees in the shade, then when you went out on the track, it was like walking into a furnace. What incredible athletes to race in those conditions!
Get ready to be blasted with lots of photos of the TORCH RUN! This is just such an electrifying, emotional experience to witness on opening night. I hope these pictures spark just a little flame of that excitement and the passion that our law enforcement officers have for Special Olympics.
First you hear the crescendoing wail of sirens in the distance. Closer . . . closer . . . louder . . .louder . . . then the crowd of athletes break forth with cheering as the motorcade rounds the bend and comes into view.
On they roll, the motorcycles, the cars, the SUVS, until finally an army of foot soldiers arrive bearing the torch; actually it was 3 torches.
During the prior week, this torch has been carried by law enforcement personel over 2000 miles of Virginia roadways to reach Richmond for the opening of the games.
The motorcade continues on down the road, but the runners, chanting and striding in rhythm, turn into the parking lot where the altheles are assemble. The crowd is in a frenzy by now.
All the athletes strain forward and reach out to give high-5's to the runners as they circle the parking lot.
After the runners pass, it is time for the parade of athletes to commence. Here's Nathan working the crowd before the parade began.
The proud Carroll County Team! We had 16 athletes participating this year. Each of the 27 areas have an escort to lead them into the Robins Center (and blessed air-conditioning!)
Cosmo is a favorite warming up the crowd.
Police officers readying the colors for presentation.
It's hard to say who enjoys this ceremony more: the officers or the athletes.
Finally, the Opening ceremony gets underway. We all rise to our feet and the honor guards usher in the flags.
So much pride and patriotism.
The National anthem is sung by a wonderful chorale with a trumpet descant.
And then it's time to light the Olympic flame. One athlete is given the honor of carrying the flame.
They circle the arena before the cheering crowd. . .
. . .Then climb the steps past ranks of police officers all saluting and giving honor to the noble athletes assembled here.
Let the games begin!
Honoring the athletes. "Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attemp."
Our littlest team member was overwhelmed by it all.
